Community gardeners hoped taking part in an ancient tradition would bring a good harvest of apples this year.

Volunteers at the Jealott’s Hill Community Landshare held a wassail after last year’s bad harvest for its apple orchard.

Janis Harding, Warfield Parish Council clerk, said: “I usually don’t believe in this sort of stuff but we’ve had such a terrible year we thought we’d do it, every little helps.”

The annual Exeter UFO Festival will go on as planned this year thanks to a local group, according to the festival’s former organizer.

Dean Merchant said last week that the festival was going to be canceled in 2013, as he was stepping down from his organizer position.

The Exeter Kiwanis, which has sponsored the festival in the past, stepped up and will organize the festival this year, Merchant said.

The user, danchek2013, has uploaded a video he claims shows footage of at at least one mysterious object zipping about over the surface of the moon.

One of the ‘craft’ emerges from the shadowy landscape of the moon’s surface and then seemingly accelerates over the craters, before changing direction at breakneck speed and heading towards the bottom of the screen.

The color of the eyes and hair of ancestors dead for hundreds of years can  now be revealed from their DNA alone, researchers say.These findings suggest investigators not only can uncover new details from  centuries-old human remains, but can also help identify crime victims,  scientists added.

By comparing genomes across thousands of people, researchers identified  genetic variations at 24 different points in the human genome  that are linked with eye and hair colors, which past studies used to help  determine the appearance of people who had died relatively recently. Now a team  of researchers from Poland and the Netherlands have developed this system  further to reveal the appearance of people long dead.

NASA’s Space Technology Program is looking for visionary advanced concepts. This year’s annual call for NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts Program (NIAC) is seeking proposals for revolutionary concepts with the potential to transform future aerospace missions. Proposed concepts should enable new missions or significantly improve current approaches to achieve aerospace objectives.

NIAC studies visionary aerospace architecture, system or mission concepts that are exciting and unexplored, yet credible and executable. The concepts are early in development — generally 10 years or more from operation. They are chosen based on peer review of the potential impact, technical strength and benefits of the proposed study.
“While Goddard or Tsiolkovsky envisioned rockets taking humans to space, the rest of the world focused on the industrial revolution and challenges of the early 20th century,” said Michael Gazarik, director of NASA’s Space Technology Program at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “These visionaries had radical ideas of space travel and exploration that would take dozens to hundreds of years for maturation, but were worth waiting for. NASA’s NIAC seeks proposals from today’s visionaries who have futuristic concepts that may transform how we live, work and explore the high frontier.”
NIAC’s current portfolio includes multiple technology areas contributing to innovations in revolutionary construction, human systems, sensing or imaging, autonomous exploration, and aerospace transportation.

Past NIAC Phase I proposals have included a broad range of imaginative and creative ideas, including: using electromagnets to protect spacecraft from radiation; the application of terrestrial ocean exploring concepts for extremely low-power exploration of under-ice oceans believed to be on Europa; printing entire spacecraft on sheets of paper; a solid-state, no-moving-parts air purifier; and other innovative propulsion and power concepts needed for future space mission operations.

The NIAC Phase I solicitation will incorporate a two-step process. NIAC will accept short proposals, limited to three pages, until Feb. 14. After review, NASA will invite those whose proposal concepts are of interest to the agency to submit a full proposal of no more than eight pages. Full proposals will be due April 18.
NASA expects to fund about 15 proposals in this year’s Phase I process. Those selected may receive up to $100,000 for nine months of study to advance the innovative space technology concept and help NASA meet current operational and future mission requirements. Selection announcements are expected this summer. The solicitation is open to all United States citizens and researchers working in the U.S., including NASA civil servants.

The number of NIAC awards will depend on the strength of proposals and availability of appropriated funds.

This NASA early investment and partnership with creative scientists, engineers and citizen inventors will pay huge technological dividends and help maintain America’s leadership in the global technology economy.

The space agencies are about to reveal more about their collaboration to send astronauts beyond Earth’s orbit. But will the Orion missions be inspirational enough for their critics?

It is now more than 40 years since a human ventured beyond Earth orbit. The last three astronauts to slip our world’s gravitational tethers were those on Apollo 17. They crossed 385,000 kilometres of space to land on the moon and then returned to splashdown in the Pacific on 19 December 1972.

Since then, no human has been higher than about 600 kilometres above Earth’s surface. Now it is time to reach out again.

Russia has said it plans to send an unmanned spacecraft to the moon in 2015 from a new launch pad in the far east of the country.

The rocket booster would deliver a half-ton space exploration vehicle with scientific equipment that would search for water and take soil samples.

A Death Star would cost over $850 quadrillion to build, according to the White House, which “does not support blowing up planets”.

The White House has rejected a petition signed by thousands of people calling for a Death Star to be built. Started by a John D, from Colorado, the petition demanded that work should begin on the project within the next four years. He claimed having a Moon-sized space station and inter-stellar weapon from the Star Wars film series would strengthen national security and create jobs.

Roughnecks working at a fracturing well in the Eagle Ford Shale drilling region say they saw unidentified lights in the night sky on consecutive days in October and captured blurry video of at least one of them.

Foreign workers are being warned of the ‘deadly risks’ they face in Saudi Arabia, with more than 45 maids awaiting execution despite growing anger at the country’s mistreatment of migrants.

The death row prisoners include a domestic worker convicted of beating her employer to death when he allegedly tried to rape her.

On Wednesday, authorities in the Middle Eastern country ignored international pleas and beheaded maid Rizana Nafeek, 24, who was convicted of killing a baby despite protesting her innocence.

Human rights group say 69 people were executed in Saudi Arabia last year and 79 the year before, including five women, one of whom was beheaded for witchcraft and sorcery.

An Orange County, CA, parent who arrived at a local high school to pick up a child reported two unusual objects moving over Huntington Beach about 5:40 p.m. on January 12, 2013, according to testimony from the Mutual UFONetwork (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witnesses’ son greeted the parent running and pointing to the sky.
