At the beginning of this century, Moses B.Cotworth stated his belief that Silbury was a giant sundial to determine seasons and the true length of the year. More recently, the writer Michael Dames has identified Silbury Hill as representative of a goddess of some kind.
According to folklore the mound was the final resting place for King Sil, who sat upright on a golden horse or within a
golden coffin, depending on which version you prefer.Legends also suggest that the mound was dropped by the Devil after prayers from the priests of Avebury, after he attempted to bury the town. Meanwhile, Paul Devereux has suggested that the hill is the focus for the whole of the Avebury Neolithic complex. But despite all these theories, we must finally acknowledge that until the monument decides to give up its secrets, its true purpose will remain enigmatic. |
