First published on March 1, 1990 POLICE and hippies are to meet before this year's summer solstice festival at Stonehenge. Wiltshire police have invited travellers and Druids to a meeting at Devizes headquarters on March 12. Police will be represented by Deputy Chief Constable Allan Elliott and other senior officers. "I have offered to meet with the travellers and Druids to give them an opportunity to explain their views before we form the strategy for this year's police operation," said Mr Elliott. "This is a normal part of our consultation arrangements and there will be other meetings with other interested parties." Travellers spokesman Alex Rosenberg welcomed the meeting and said: "Something positive needs to come out of this meeting. I think there's a formula you can have for gatherings of festivals at Stonehenge." He added: "With a bit of tolerance, there must be a way of coming to an arrangement which is a credit to Wiltshire and to the country. "We need the support of the people in Wiltshire, but they have got to accept that Stonehenge is a world heritage site and they can't keep it to themselves. It's one of the most important monuments in the world." A public meeting has also been organised by Mr Rosenberg, at Salisbury City Hall on March 15. At last year's solstice festival police arrested 129 people. Meanwhile, the hippies have vowed to hold a mass nude demonstration on June 21. Back to 1990 index |
