First published on December 3, 1986 WILTSHIRE has taken the first steps in preventing a pop festival at Stonehenge next year. The county council yesterday handed over full powers to top council officer Andrew Browning to once again take any action to stop hippies holding an illegal gathering at the ancient monument. Coun Tony Phillips reacted with anger at the news that charges against 120 hippies involved in the 1985 Stonehenge clash with police had been dropped. Policing that event cost Wiltshire ratepayers £1 million and Coun Phillips said there was 'public disquiet' at the waste. "To me that is an enormous waste of police time," said Coun Phillips, Tory member for Southwick. Back to 1986 index |
