published on April 5, 1984 SOME of Wiltshire's most famous landmarks have been taken over. A new government aided body, the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, now has responsibility for them. The commission, to be known as English Heritage, has taken control of 400 monuments in England, among them Wiltshire's stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury and Old Sarum Castle at Salisbury. Commission chairman, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu has already announced an inquiry into the long-term future of Stonehenge to secure its fabric and improve facilities. The commission's work, to 'secure the preservation of historic sites,' was formerly carried out by the ancient Monuments Board and the Historic Buildings Council who advised the Department of the Environment. English Heritage will provide educational facilities, carry out research and keep records. It will get £52m in the first year from te government and hopes to raise £2.4m in admission fees and sales of souvenirs at the places of interest. The commission took over responsibility for the monuments on April 1, the Duke of Gloucester is a deputy chairman. Back to 1984 index |
