Stonehenge's future has been mapped out in a plan unveiled by culture secretary Chris Smith.

The government minister said the World Heritage Site Management Plan would protect the monument and the surrounding area, as well as increase public access.

The plan, which provides a framework for the management of the site, was welcomed by The National Trust.

Mark Harold, the trust's area manager for Wiltshire, said: 'Visitors, archaeology and wildlife will all benefit from increasing the permanent grassland around Stonehenge as set out in the plan.

'Access will be extended, while protecting from ploughing and encouraging a rich plant habitat to flourish.'

The UK Government has an obligation to produce management plans for all its World Heritage Sites, under a convention drawn up by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
