First published on August 6, 1984 AVEBURY archaeologist Michael Pitts showed Her Imperial Highness Princess Mori of Japan around the ancient stone circle on Saturday. The 15-year old princess was interested and enthusiastic about the archaeological sites, said Mr Pitts. "I really enjoyed it. I've shown lots and lots of people around here but she was one of the best," he said. Mr Pitts, who has been archaeologist at Avebury for the past five years, was asked to be the Princess's guide by the National Trust. The Princess had an interpreter with her, but was able to understand and speak a little English on the tour. Mr Pitts said: "At first it was a bit formal and everyone was bowing but once we started off round the circle it was fine." Back to 1984 index |
