First Published August 6 1994 STONEHENGE could be put into private hands in an attempt to breathe new life into Britain's ancient heritage, it was revealed today. The Government is considering plans to lease out the ancient stone circle to a private company. It is thought the Stones, the West's most visited tourist attraction, could benefit from a more commercial approach. Under the scheme companies would be allowed to develop Stonehenge, and other top attractions, to make a profit - buying a lease allowing them to manage the property which is currently run by English Heritage. The idea comes from an inquiry launched by Michael Portillo while he was Chief Secretary at the Treasury and is bound to lead to controversy. Labour's National Heritage spokeswoman Mo Mowlem accused Mr Portillo of 'putting historic Britain into a car boot sale.' A spokesman for English Heritage said: 'The reason we have so many monuments in public guardianship is that they are ruins and could never make a profit. 'Only Stonehenge makes what you could call a profit and that is because it needs little maintenance.' Over the years the Stonehenge site has attracted much criticism for its drab and uninspiring appearance. Back to 1994 index |
