THE 25 ton stone, No 23 in the outer circle at Stonehenge, which fell down last year, was moved yesterday as the first step towards re-erecting it.

It was partly over the hole in which it had stood, and had to be lifted clear yesterday by crane. The stone, which was on its back is being turned on to its side. Then a steel "corset" and inner packing of timber will be fitted.

This operation will take some days while Ministry of Works carpenters marry-up the inner surface of the timber to all the irregularities of the stone's surfaces. A similar operation was undertaken in 1958-59. The hole and stone should be ready for its resetting in a fortnight's time.

The final stages will be to pour in a concrete bed to hold the stone upright and to cover the bed with earth once the concrete is set. The utmost care will be taken to ensure that the stone will be back in its exact position of nearly 4,000 years ago.

The Ministry is also going to straighten another stone in the outer circle (No 27) and fix it in concrete. The horseshoe trilithon composed of stones 53, 54 and their lintel 154, which is leaning slightly, will also be secured in its present position.
