First published on August 7, 1986 A LOW-KEY festival to mark the summer solstice could be held at Stonehenge next year. Monument owners English Heritage and the National Trust are considering whether to hold a festival at the stones for a limited numbers of people. If it goes ahead it will be held on June 20 and 21. The news that a working party had been set up to investigate the idea came on Thursday after a meeting of representatives from English Heritage, the National Trust, Wiltshire County Council, Salisbury District Council, Amesbury Town Council and Wiltshire police. It was welcomed by Wiltshire County Council chairman Jack Ainslie. "I think this is the only way forward. It will not be a pop festival and will only be for a limited duration. It will be an opportunity for those who feel the stones have some religious or cultural significance to go to them at this time of the year," he said. The move is being made in a bid to prevent any possible hippies invasion of Stonehenge again next year. Everyone at the meeting agreed that there should be no pop festival at the stones next year or in future years. The working party set up to look at the possibility of staging a limited festival will include representatives from Wiltshire County Council and all other interested bodies. It is hoped religious groups will have been contacted by the autumn to find out whether they agree with the idea of a limited festival. Back to 1986 index |
