published April 8 2003 £50,000 operation to shore up Avebury stones
ARCHAEOLOGISTS have begun work to lift two unsafe ancient stones at Avebury
into an upright position. The two surviving Cove stones are at the centre of the Northern Inner Circle. Because of their unstable condition the stones, with a combined weight of about 90 tons, have been fenced off since 1997 in case one of them fell without warning. But now the National Trust, is working closely with English Heritage to return the megaliths to a vertical position in an operation costing £50,000, provided by the National Trust and English Heritage. A special scaffolding framework has been erected to support giant jacks which will be used to adjust the angle of the stones. Yesterday a team of archaeologists began excavating an area around the trenches. Once their work is done, contractors will use their jacks to position the stones. The process should be complete by the end of next month. Back to 2003 index |
