First published on June 8, 1985 AN uneasy truce is still holding in the battle of Stonehenge. Hippies, thwarted in their efforts to hold their illegal pop festival, are expected to renew their efforts at the summer solstice on June 21, but isolated skirmishes are likely before then and police are out in force. As part of this year's clampdown the Druids have been banned from holding their Midsummer ritual at Stonehenge as the sun rises over the stones. The ancient monument and the nearby field where the festival has been held in past years have been ringed with razor sharp coiled wire. But the battle to prevent festival-goers reaching the field last weekend was a close one. While hundreds of police stopped the "peace convoy" reaching the site only about 30 officers faced 300 hippies who marched towards the field. Two campers from Savernake Forest appeared at a special court in Marlborough today and were remanded in custody until Thursday. One was accused of driving while disqualified and refusing to provide a specimen; the other was accused of stealing a bag of pigeon corn from a doorstep in Marlborough High Street.
