First published on June 8, 1988 HUNDREDS of walkers trying to beat the ban on an unofficial summer solstice festival at Stonehenge have been told to keep walking. People are thought to be heading towards the site on foot to make it more difficult for the police to stop any festivities on June 21. A group of 60 people from London stopped overnight in Berkshire. Other groups are reported to be travelling from Cambridge, Oxford, Coventry, Frome and Bristol. A spokesman for Wiltshire police said every year hippies marched to Wiltshire from Hyde Park, London, but he had not heard of other walkers heading into the county. "There are no great numbers people in Wiltshire. "Each year the march from Hyde Park tends to fizzle out as they get nearer Wiltshire. They tend to get tired," he said. He stressed that English Heritage had 1,000 tickets available for people wanting to visit Stonehenge for the solstice. "After that no-one will be able to get to the stones. There will be no festival and no land available for them to camp on. "There is nowhere for them to go so they will just have to keep on walking," he added. Back to 1988 index |
