First published on April 9, 1968 TO add to the amenities at Stonehenge and to cater for ever-increasing attendances - in the past two years there have been on average more than a thousand visitors a day - the Ministry of Public Building and Works is engaged on a programme of improvement and reorganisation. Unsightly structures are being removed. The old Trackway, with its vistas of parked cars, has been diverted farther westward of the Circle and out of sight. A subway will eliminate crossing the busy main road A344 between the car park and the monument. A new sales point, welfare accommodation, tea bar, and store are being installed. The purpose is to enhance the visual effect of Stonehenge by restoring something of the original atmosphere of isolation. At the same time, hazards to pedestrians and motorists will be removed. Work is being undertaken after consultation and in co-operation with the National Trust (who own land to the north and west of Stonehenge), Wiltshire County Council and rural and parish councils. The hope is that it will be completed by Whitsun. Among the structures being removed are the point for selling tickets and publications within the Circle area; hutted staff accommodation in the car park; and the refreshment caravan. All these amenities will be placed in a semi-underground position out of sight of the monument. The car park has been extended westward and its eastern end is being removed, so that there need no longer be a view of vehicles from the Circle. Back to 1968 index |
