First Published October 10 1992 PLANS have been unveiled for a new visitors' centre at Stonehenge, which include removing the road running alongside the monument. English Heritage and the National Trust last night confirmed rumours that Edward Cullinan - an architect admired by the Prince of Wales - had been chosen for the project. The plans include new visitor facilities and a car park - threequarters of a mile north of the monument - at Larkhill. A new access road will be built from the west. The scheme provides for a network of footpaths and bridleways and restoration of the landscape to chalk grassland. There will be exhibition areas, a theatre, educational facilities, a specialist information centre, a restaurant and a shop. A public inquiry in March will examine the plans. Back to 1992 index |
