published January 11th 2003 THE National Trust, which owns most of the land at Stonehenge world Heritage Site, has further secured its future by buying part of Greenlands Farm at the western edge of the site. The purchase of two large fields adds a further 56 hectares to the 770 already owned by the Trust. Most of the land is owned inalienably, meaning it can never be sold without an Act of Parliament. The acquisition will ensure that the Lesser Cursus stone formation in the north western corner of the site need never again be ploughed. The Trust says its move will also improve the landscape of the western part of the site, which includes the approach to the main formation and the Monarch of the Plain, one of the largest round barrows.
