First published on August 12, 1999 SCORES of Swindon residents headed for historic Avebury for the eclipse. They joined hundreds of visitors from across the county and further afield who descended on the village to gather around the ancient stones and soak up the atmosphere. Traffic ground to a halt as a result of the cars flocking through. At 11.11am all was silent as sun-watchers looked to the skies. Dave Cotrell, 47, who travelled from Swindon for the event, said: "It was a shame about the clouds, but what we saw was very good. "The atmosphere here is great anyway." He said his grandson Jack four, had found it all great fun and hoped he might be around to see the next eclipse as well. Anne Yeoman, 40, of Wootton Bassett, said: "I think it is good that it was cloudy because it will have stopped people looking at the sun for so long. "It has probably saved a lot of people's eyes." Her mother, Terri McWilliam, 73, of Cricklade, was alive when the last total eclipse occurred, but was only one year old. "I have really enjoyed myself today it was definitely worth coming," she said. As well as eclipse watcher, Avebury's mysterious history attracted a group of UFO enthusiasts. Elaine Waite, founder of the UFO Postal Network, said: "We came down to see if anything paranormal would happen afterwards, like it did after the eclipse in Mexico. "We haven't seen anything today, but we have seen many weird and wonderful things in this area in the past." Back to 1999 index |
