ANGRY county councillors last week forced an about-face over the Stonehenge festival.

A Tory revolt obliged Wiltshire County Council to abandon any plans for a properly organised festival. Alliance councillors voted against their own leader to end the hope of avoiding another confrontation with the peace convoy hippies.

The council's policy committee last month voted narrowly to accept a motion by Swindon Labour council for Bob Johnson to hold talks about an organised festival.

Coun Johnson argued that the hippies would be coming next year anyway and the only hope of avoiding a confrontation with police was by allowing them.

But police authority chairman John Church said Chief Constable Donald Smith opposed any festival. Mr Smith had said that a festival would add to his force's problems.

Former police authority chairman Derek Jarvis backed the chief constable's line. Councillors voted to throw out the idea of talks over a festival by two votes.
