published on July 13, 1989 THE restoration of a 300-year-old church has revealed more than rising damp. Since work began on the United Reformed Church within Avebury's stone circle, archaeologists have identified the possible site of a central stone just in front of the building. Some 18th century pottery has also been discovered. The church, which has a congregation of just seven, is to be completely renovated at a cost of £85,000. Minister Bert Jones hopes the work will be completed by November. "It will be an architectural gem when it is finished," he said. "But I shall be very interested to see what they find next." Mr Jones still has £4,000 to raise towards the repair work. English Heritage gave £57,120 with other money coming from the United Reformed Church and the Historic Churches Preservation Trust.
