First published on August 14, 1986 WILTSHIRE ratepayers footed the lion's share of this year's hippie policing bill. And now a Tory MP wants hippies, and not 'long-suffering ratepayers', to pick up the tab themselves. Total cost of policing the hippie convoy, which rumbled through the west Country before trying to gather for an illegal concert at Stonehenge, was more than £500,000. Of that , Wiltshire ratepayers will have to fork out £340,000. Hippies cost Avon and Somerset £130,000 and Dorset £85,000. But Leicester MP Peter Bruinvels wants the Government to ensure that the 'appalling cost' is repaid by hippies trough deductions in benefit. The outspoken Tory stormed: "It's totally unacceptable that police authorities and ratepayers should have to foot the Bill for this troublemaking incursion by social dropouts." He went on: "It is the people who caused this trouble and nuisance who should pick up the tab, and not the long-suffering ratepayers." Mr Bruinvels wants Home Secretary Douglas Hurd to ask police chiefs to supply names of hippies to the DHSS so benefit payments can be cut. Back to 1986 index |
