First Published August 14 1996 A WOMAN armed with an air pistol was arrested after she fired shots at security guards at Stonehenge. The unidentified woman, fired the .177 rounds inside the monument as she was confronted by the guards. The woman, who was also armed with a kitchen knife, was grabbed from behind and disarmed by an off duty policeman as she argued with guards. PC Alan King, a Metropolitan Police officer, was on a day trip with his daughter when the shooting happened at 5.15pm yesterday. A police spokesman said: 'PC King saved the day and everyone a lot of heartache.' Armed officers were rushing to the world famous monument and the area was about to be evacuated when the woman was disarmed by PC King. The woman, who also had a pet hamster called Joe with her, was detained under the provisions of the Mental Health Act and for various firearms offences. No one was hurt during the incident and the stones were undamaged. A woman is being held by Wiltshire police at Salisbury station and is due in court this morning. Back to 1996 index |
