First published December 14, 1989 CHARLIE, a 5,000-year old skeleton at Avebury Museum, has found a new companion. A four-inch newt has moved into his glass-covered display case for the winter. It is thought to be hibernating, but has been known to take a few constitutionals along its host's bones when tempted out by a warm spotlight. Head custodian at the museum Dave Davidge said: "It's been there since about autumn. It probably came from the pond about 300 yards away when it was looking for somewhere to hibernate. "We don't see it very often. It's usually hidden in a crevice somewhere." After its stint as a museum piece, the newt will be taken back to the pond in the summer Back to 1989 index |
