First published on October 15, 1991 DEMOLITION work at Avebury Manor has unearthed important medieval remains. Archaeologists have found relics dating back to the 12th century and now believe the manor house was built before the Elizabethan period. Items found include pottery from the early Middle Ages and stone and glazed tiles from the 15th and 16th centuries. The manor is thought to be a late-medieval house attached to a monastic property. The dig has also revealed earthworks and a wall which archaeologists think could be part of a 12th century priory. Back to 1991 index |
