published on April 17 1986 AVEBURY needs to strike a balance between commercialism and being a place to live in, chairman Miss Betty Hunter told the annual parish meeting. The parish council and residents had been concerned about the growth in the number of signs put up in the village. The Heritage Commission had undertaken to put up finger-posts around the village after mistakenly thinking they were only needed to guide tourists to the different parts of the stone circle. There was a particular need for a sign at the High Street end of the lane leading to the Great Barn museum, National Trust shop and Stones restaurant, said the chairman. The parish council view was that adequate finger-posting would remove the need for any other signs, Miss Hunter said. An information leaflet is also being published this year to show visitors to Avebury where all the facilities are. Back to 1986 index |
