First published on June 18, 1987 POLICE hope that 1987 will be the year that summer returns to something approaching normality in Wiltshire. Memories are still vivid of the violent scenes which marked the last police-hippie battle and Wiltshire police are determined that never again should there be a repeat of that confrontation. There are no road closures and no barbed wire this year but 200 policemen forming ten police support units have been on alert. The new Public Order Act has given the police a much greater degree of flexibility and in its first test this week at Marden on the edge of Salisbury Plain, the police appeared to have the upper hand. The new Act means local landowners will no longer have to wait to get an injunction to remove groups of hippies from their land. The police say that by preventing large groups of hippies getting together the situation will never again become intimidating. By discouraging the use of vehicles many hippies have had to resort this year to walking around the county and police say that this in itself has broken the previous tension. Back to 1987 index |
