First published on June 18, 1988 HUNDREDS of police stood guard over Stonehenge today as up to 200 hippie vehicles encircled Salisbury Plain. The hippies, gathering for Tuesday's Summer Solstice, have set up their largest camp on the A360 at Orcheston, just three miles from the monument. An estimated 120 vehicles are there. Another group has set up camp at Woodhenge, an ancient monument just north of Amesbury. Wiltshire Chief Constable Donald Smith had called in reinforcements from Dorset and Avon and Somerset. Meanwhile, 30 people arrested at Stonehenge last night were due to appear before magistrates at Salisbury today accused of public order offences, assault and criminal damage. Last night a group of hippies took police by surprise when they smashed through a fence and drove their vehicles onto a field alongside Stonehenge. Fighting broke out after they jumped from their mobile homes and ran towards the monument. The hippies say they want to celebrate Tuesday morning's Solstice sunrise, but police are determined not to let them. They say a Solstice festival would be illegal. English Heritage, responsible for Stonehenge, is holding a ticket-only ceremony for 600 people to celebrate the Solstice. Organisers say only those with tickets will be admitted. Several hundred hippies are also camped at various sites around Wiltshire. Back to 1988 index |
