First published on December 18, 1984 THE National Trust, which owns the Stonehenge site, will mount a £20,000 campaign in the spring to save the monument form being destroyed. It will erect tons of fencing around the 1700-acre site on Salisbury Plain to prevent the annual visit by 100,000 rock music fans attending the Stonehenge Free Festival. The National Trust claims the siting of the annual festival around Stonehenge is eroding Britain's most valuable archaeological relic. A £10,000 publicity campaign, to advise festival supporters of the ban, will be launched in the New Year. Back to 1984 index |
