First published on January 19, 1991 THE National Trust has bought more land in Wiltshire to protect the historic village of Avebury. The parcel is of 25 acres at Overton Hill, Avebury, including three-quarters of a mile of the ancient Ridgeway, the Seven Barrows, which dates back to the Bronze Age, and a section of the Roman road to Bath. A barrow is a mound of earth used to cover one or more ancient tombs. The trust currently owns 1,500 acres at Avebury. An appeal for £750,000 launched by the trust to pay for 480 acres of land around the village is £50,000 short of its target. Back to 1991 index |
