First published on May 19, 1988 HIPPIE leaders are promising the biggest party of the year at this summer's Stonehenge festival. Organisers say even more people will flock to this year's June festival, despite pleas from Stonehenge landowners English Heritage for them to keep away. There is increased demand for the event this year, say organisers, because of the cancellation of the traditional Glastonbury festival. Members of the Stonehenge Campaign will launch their plans at a press conference in London on Tuesday. English Heritage has made provision for 1,000 people to attend the Solstice ceremony at dawn on June 21 but has re-affirmed its opposition to an unauthorised encampment or free festival in the area. Alex Rosenberger, editor of the annual Solstice magazine Festival Eye, had a warning for the authorities. "They should make provision for the people who will be gathering in Wiltshire in June instead of pretending they are not coming," he said. Walks to Stonehenge will be leaving from London, Bristol, Oxford, Doncaster, Glastonbury and elsewhere from June 1. Back to 1988 index |
