First published on March 20, 1986 ICE creams are OK but hot dogs are not, Avebury Parish Council has ruled. That was the reaction to a planning application for a mobile refreshment shop in the southern car park at the side of the Devizes-Swindon road. The application was made by Wiltshire County Council which owns the car park. The county council was making the application to regularise the previously illicit use of the car park by an ice-cream van. But councillors were concerned that the application for a mobile refreshment shop was not restricted to ice-cream and soft drinks. The village pubs, the Stones restaurant and the village post office stores were concerned they would lose trade if a snack bar was allowed to open, the meeting heard. The parish council agreed to accept an ice-cream van in the car park, but not a snack bar. The van should be removed every night, and trade only during the tourist season, councillors said. Their views will be sent to Kennet District Council, which is the planning authority. Back to 1986 index |
