First Published June 20 2000 Stonehenge will be open to the general public tonight for the first time since 1984. Although English Heritage is expecting several thousand people to visit the historic Wiltshire site, they are confident the night will pass without any problems. The move to open Stonehenge for the summer solstice comes just one year after an organised visit for 150 people, including religious groups, was disrupted after gatecrashers pushed down fences and clambered on the stones. Stonehenge was originally closed to the general public during the summer solstice in the 1980's and a four-mile exclusion order was put in place following a series of disorder problems. Tonight, security guards and stewards will have a visible presence with backup from the police, but English Heritage says the emphasis is on the public's enjoyment of the event. An English Heritage spokeswoman said: 'We've made arrangements to try to make this a happy and peaceful solstice for people. 'It's a large landscape so we could be expecting large numbers.'
