First published on July 20, 1996 LASERS have been brought in to clean off graffiti daubed on prehistoric stones. The attack last month left eight stones at Avebury covered in strange symbols. The lasers were brought in to assist with the delicate task of cleaning the paint off the stones without damaging the rare lichen that grows on them. Work started at the end of last month and is expected to be completed within a coiple of weeks. Chris Gingell, the National Trust property manager at Avebury said a solution was mixed up to apply to affected areas to take the paint off. The lasers were brought in to remove the final traces of paint from the stones which have been standing there for 4,500 years. "The lasers are able to use real precision to remove the paint. It has provided a very important part in the restoration." A paint stripper could have been used but this could cause permanent damage. He said the vandalism might have a long term affect but the concern was to ensure it would not leave a permanent scarring. Back to 1996 index |
