First published on September 20, 1997 THE Thunderbirds television show has inspired a solution to the problem to laying electricity cables under the 5,000-year-old Avebury ring. The British World Heritage site is having an overhead electricity line removed and placed underground, Southern Electric announced yesterday. But Southern Electric working with Wiltshire County Council's archaeology department had a problem when trial holes found significant Roman artifacts buried 600mm below the surface, so trenches for the cables could not be dug. Southern Electric's solution was to use a new device called The Mole which can burrow underneath the Roman remains. Calvin Eales, a spokesman for Southern Electric, said: "The Mole in questions uses the latest technology in drilling techniques. It has an uncanny resemblance to The Mole piloted by Virgil Tracy from the classic Thunderbirds series." Duncan Coe, assistant county archaeologist, said: "We're very grateful to Southern Electric for their co-operation and acting in a sympathetic and caring manner." Back to 1997 index |
