AN exhibition has revealed plans to put Stonehenge back into a greenfield setting.

The exhibition, launched jointly by the Road Minister, Lord Whitty and English Heritage chairman Sir Jocelyn Stevens invited public consultation about the scheme.

Both the Highways Agency and English Heritage believe they have finally come up with the right scheme which will take traffic away from the monument - the significance of which has been diminished by the traffic.

There are plans to close the A344, which passes very close to the monument. The busier A303 will be upgraded to a dual carriageway which will be placed in tunnel where it passes closest to the 5,000 year old stone circle.

More than 13,000 leaflets were handed out at the exhibition held at Antrobus House, Amesbury, in which people are invited to comment on various aspects of the proposed road changes.

Sir Jocelyn said: 'The exhibition marks the beginning of the end of the battle to save Stonehenge.'

Lord Whitty said: 'We now have a strategy to restore Stonehenge to something like its original setting.'
