THE Druids turned up too late for the sunrise at Stonehenge today - the first day of summer.

They arrived in full regalia to carry out their dawn service about half-an-hour after the sun rose, casting its first rays into the circle.

They were watched by a crowd of several hundred people outside the fencing surrounding the stones. Only those who had applied to the rural council for passes were allowed within the circle.

Precautions in case of rowdiness included posting both military and civil police officers with dogs. A provost office was set up inside the circle.
