First Published June 21 1996 THIRTY nine people were arrested during the night as police threw up a security cordon around historic Stonehenge. About a hundred officers from Wiltshire Constabulary joined forces with private security guards from the National Trust to prevent people trying to celebrate the summer solstice at the ancient monument. The majority of the arrests were for breach of the peace or taking part in outlawed processions and assemblies. There were also two arrests for drugs offences. Inspector Geoff Hicks, police spokesman, said they were satisfied with the way the operation had gone. ̉There were no injuries, no damage and no disruption to the public.' The special restrictions on illegal gatherings around Stonehenge, which bans assemblies of more than 20 people within four miles of the monument, will stay in force until 11.59pm on Sunday.
