STONEHENGE - Wiltshire's top tourist spot - has earned the dubious title of the country's dreariest crowd-puller.

The prehistoric monument which attracts 687,000 visitors a year, is today condemned as boring, and squalid in a report by Parliament's financial watchdog, the National Audit Office.

The parking is inadequate, the subway approach is dark and dreary and the shop small and overcrowded, says the report.

This morning staff working at Stonehenge had not heard the reports and were unable to comment. But an English Heritage spokeswoman said: 'We have been trying to improve the facilities around Stonehenge and we completely agree that it is not what it could be.'

Plans for the future include a restaurant and a visitor centre.
