THE rift between Avebury villagers over tourist attractions in the manor grounds shows no sign of lessening in the season of goodwill.

Parishioners opposing Ken and Gillian King's plans for an Elizabethan theme park at Avebury Manor have set up an action group called AID Avebury In Danger. Liberal politician Sir High Jones is the chairman and broadcaster Ludovic Kennedy is vice-chairman. This week Sir High has been putting the finishing touches to an AID submission which will be circulated to Kennet District Council planners before they meet on January 12 to discuss the manor scheme.

The group, which has about 40 members, wants the council to refuse the plans. Failing that, they want Kennet to delay until a local plan for Avebury is prepared. "This takes two years to get it into the final form but it is perfectly possible if given the priority to get it to a draft stage within a couple of months," said Sir Hugh.

Sir Hugh says AID is prepared to press the Department of the Environment to call a public inquiry. "Our principal concern is the impact this kind of development would have on Avebury. The village has always resisted commercial exploitation of itself or its tourists."

But retired jack-of-all-trades Frank Fishlock, who has lived in Avebury for 73 years, says it is time to accept change. No-one, he says, can expect the Kings to repair the manor house without seeing a return on the investment.

He started a petition supporting the proposals. Copies of the 157-signature petition have been handed to Mr King and the parish council. Mr Fishlock says most opposition come from those who have only recently come to Avebury.
