First published on July 23, 1991 ELIZABETHAN Avebury Manor is up for sale again. The Grade 1 listed manor has attracted worldwide attention since its owner, the National Trust, announced its intention to lease the property. The house, set within a historically important site, became a controversial showpiece when Ken King bought it and turned it into an Elizabethan theme park. The National Trust took control earlier this year and is offering a 20-year lease on the property for use as a family home. "We had a tremendous amount of interest, even before the property was put on the market because the National Trust's intentions were well-known," said Phillip Nicholson for sole agents Carter Jonas, based in Marlborough. "The interest has been coming from home and abroad. My phone hasn't stopped ringing." The new owner will need to find at least £200,000 for the 20-year lease, provide a new central heating system, and carry out repairs and redecorate. He also be expected to pay the National Trust's £2,300 annual insurance premium on the property and put up with tourists tramping through the gardens and some rooms of the manor five days a week in the summer. A self-contained three-bedroom wing and about 19 acres of garden and parkland will be kept by the National Trust. A semi-detached three-bedroom cottage can be bought separately for an asking price of £85,000 freehold or negotiated with the lease for the manor. Back to 1991 index |
