published on 24th June 2002 THE Summer Solstice celebrations at Avebury ran on over the weekend. Around 200 travellers descended on the village to take part in the pagan festival on Friday and many stayed on for a pagan wedding on Saturday. Police sealed off car parks to prevent more travellers arriving and negotiated with groups camped in the National Trust grounds before they left peacefully. Police made 12 arrests over the solstice for minor drug offences and drunkenness. Back to 2002 index |
