First published on January 25, 1994 TOURISTS visiting ancient monuments around Silbury Hill, near Avebury, will now be able to take a break with a cream tea. Although Kennet Council rejected the idea, the Department of the Environment has come to the aid of visitors seeking sustenance. Local planners refused permission for garden teas to be sold at Silbury Hill Cottage, but an appeal by owners Ian and Jan Rendle has been successful. DoE inspector Michael Montague-Smith says that there are no strong objections to the low-key use envisaged. Afternoon teas would be provided in the garden only during weekends and bank holidays between Easter and early September. The Rendles already run a bed-and-breakfast business from their cottage, and say they are delighted at the appeal decision. Their brick and thatch cottage is next to a public footpath used by walkers making their way to the scheduled ancient monument of West Kennet Long Barrow. Back to 1994 index |
