First published on March 25, 1987 THERE are lessons of organisation to be learned after the Police Complaints Authority report on the battle of Stonehenge two years ago, Wiltshire's chief constable, Donald Smith, admitted today. He said the criticisms of police action related largely to the 'organisational problems' of dealing with a large number of prisoners at one time. Mr Smith added: 'However, I shall always remain exceptionally proud of the way in which the vast majority of the Wiltshire Constabulary, and the officers who assisted them, acquitted themselves on that day when confronted by a determined group of people whose use of violence knew no bounds." Tim Green, a solicitor representing many of the hippies said he would be advising clients to consider civil action against Wiltshire Police. He called for outstanding criminal damage charges, to be dropped. Back to 1987 index |
