AN historic Wiltshire village has said no to big business.

Avebury does not want supermarkets, hypermarkets or multi-storey car parks, Coun Major David Harris, chairman told the Kennet District Council local plans sub-committee. "Facilities such as a bigger shop or post office will be something the village wants even though they are classed as business enterprises," said Coun Maj Harris, who is district Councillor for the village.

The committee was discussing the draft plan for the area, and heard that Wiltshire County Council could be pressed to re-instate plans for an Avebury bypass. Planning director John Lee said: "We are not actually flying a kite in suggesting this. We are trying to get the issue back on the table for discussion.

"Kennet left Avebury out of the Marlborough area local plan because of the importance of the village which has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Avebury plan looks at the two issues of local needs and the archaeological and tourist aspects of the area.

Future housing development should be restricted to infilling in Avebury itself although the planners suggest small groups of houses should be allowed at Avebury Trusloe. In the hamlets of West Kennet and Beckhampton, which are covered by the Avebury plan new housing will be limited to essential agricultural needs.

For low cost homes to meet local needs the council will consider development in areas where it would not normally be allowed. The sub committee members agreed with Coun David Godwin who said it had to be remembered that Avebury was not only an ancient monument but also a thriving village.

"We need to establish policies which will protect and enhance both," he said. "It is a living village and the needs of the people living there must be taken into account." The draft plan also encourages the provision of improved overnight accommodation facilities in the area.
