First published on October 26, 1989 Irretrievable damage may already have been done to possible archeological sites by illegal building work at Avebury Manor, it was alleged at a public inquiry in Devizes yesterday. The inquiry into Ken King's Elizabethan theme park at the Grade I listed building, resumed this week. The inquiry is hearing evidence on 27 appeals made by Mr King against enforcement notices issued by Kennet District Council. Aubrey Woodruffe Burl, a council member for Wiltshire Archeological Society, said a number of excavations for building had been carried out without archeological supervision. "Avebury henge is the hub of Britain's greatest prehistoric complex." Hugh Cantlie, for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, claimed Mr King intended to increase visitors to 100,000 and make 900 car parking spaces. "That number of visitors is the equivalent of a battalion of soldiers marching through each day." Under cross examination National Trust warden, Chris Gingell refuted a suggestion exhibitions at the Great Barn at Avebury would attract more visitors. The inquiry continues. Back to 1989 index |
