First published on August 27, 1988 RATEPAYERS face a bill of more than £300,000 following violent clashes between police and hippies at Stonehenge. The cost of mounting the massive police operation at this year's Summer Solstice includes fees of up to £20,000 each to 16 other forces who provided additional manpower. Chief Constable Walter Girven, who has inherited the hefty bill from his predecessor Donald Smith, is to appeal for the cash at his first police committee meeting on Thursday. In his report to county councillors, Mr Girven, says he is most conscious of the need for severe financial restraint. "However, in view of other pressures it will not be possible to find resources within my existing budget to finance this operation," he says. He goes on to say that the extra cash is needed for the force to operate effectively for the rest of the year. Wiltshire policemen claimed a massive £67,000 in overtime during last June's operation and feeding the 1,200 officers who took part cost a further £17,500. Other costs include a £23,000 charge for flying a police helicopter near the scene on Salisbury Plain. Nearly 70 hippies were arrested at Stonehenge after 4,000 forced their way towards the ancient monument to celebrate the summer solstice. Back to 1988 index |
