First Published March 28 1991 THE National Trust is backing plans for a multi-million pound visitors' centre at Stonehenge. The National Trust and English Heritage will now make a joint application for outline planning permission at the World Heritage site. The idea for a new centre and improved car parks was originally proposed by English Heritage, which manages the stones on behalf of the nation. But the National Trust owns most of the surrounding land, so its support is crucial. Another key part of the plans includes closing the A344 and opening up a new access road at Airman's corner, near the proposed visitors' centre at Larkhill. Currently 700,000 people a year visit Stonehenge and up to a million people use the free facilities adjoining it. But the proposals have already provoked opposition from people who fear the new centre will be too far from the stones for the elderly and handicapped to reach them. Others say closing the A344 will put an extra strain on existing roads. But National Trust director David Bett says: 'The new access will bring visitors to a point where they can see the monument in its proper context.' Back to 1991 index |
