First publised on April 28, 1977 THE residents of picture post card village Avebury are keeping their fingers crossed in the hopes that talk of a summer invasion by pop fans is all rumour. The Wiltshire Association of District councils have expressed concern about reports of free pop festivals being planned for Avebury and Stonehenge. Its members were concerned about the policing of the festivals rubbish disposal, sanitary conditions and other practical measures. The people of Avebury (population 537 at the 1971 census) are quite used to invasions. Every spring sees the start of a new influx of visitors, people who appreciate Avebury for what it is a pre-historic mystery. But tourists and pop fans are different propositions and the possibility of a free pop festival taking place in or near the village is worrying the residents. Parish council chairman, Mrs G W E Heath, said today: "We are all quite horrified at these reports and we all hope it never happens." So far, she says, no specific site in the village has been suggested. "I wouldn't have thought they could possibly go in the stone circle. "We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is only a rumour and does not happen," said Mrs Heath. Although concern is being shown by local people, and the question of the pop festival was raised at the annual parish meeting, local feeling is that nothing can be done at the moment, says Mrs Heath. "Really we cannot do anything about it anyway. It's up to the county council and the police." Reference to pop festivals being planned at Avebury and Stonehenge were spotted in an underground journal by a member of the Wiltshire Association of District Councils. Back to 1977 index |
