First published on July 28, 1988 A PREHISTORIC scull and skeleton have been found at an excavation site. Cardiff University archaeology students made the discovery at a dig on top of Windmill Hill, near Avebury. The broken skull was found in one excavation hole next to the remains of an ox. The skeleton of a Neolithic man was dug up close by in a proper grave. Cardiff archaeology lecturer Doctor Alasdair Wittle, leading the excavation team, said: "It's a very nice find, although not unique, because bits of human bodies are sometimes found. "The complete skeleton is more interesting because it is in a proper funeral grave. Around this area bodies were generally buried in long barrows." The bones are now being taken back to Cardiff before being sent to London University for carbon dating to discover their exact age. The site, on which work was started several years ago and reopened in June by the students, will shut in two weeks. Back to 1988 index |
