INITIATIVES to free Stonehenge and the village of Winterbourne Stoke of traffic along the busy A303 are due to be unveiled today.

The exhibition by the Highways Agency shows all the alternative routes which have been considered. It marks the start of a public debate on whether the road needs to be improved, and if so how it should be done.

A special planning conference headed by an independent chairman will be held in November, where all interested parties can put forward their views and proposals.

"Various plans to improve this stretch of road have been put forward in the past," said Tony Duke, project director for the scheme, "but no agreement has been reached on what should be done.

"We have taken the unusual step of holding a conference as an attempt to come up with a workable solution.

"The meeting will give local residents, road users and organisations such as English Heritage and the National Trust the chance to present their views and to come forward with a viable route."

The local exhibition is on view from today until Saturday at the parish council pavilion in the village of Durrington.
