First published on December 29, 1984 LAND surrounding Wiltshire's most famous monument is to become a no-go area for pop fans. The National Trust has decided the land around Stonehenge cannot be used for pop festivals in future. It said today the festivals have damaged Britain's bestknown archaeological site and the down itself. This could no longer be accepted if the trust was to honour its responsibilities to the nation, its members and the original donors. "The gathering of tens of thousands of pop festival followers, which in 1984, lasted form the end of May until early July, seriously affects the enjoyment of many visitor who come to see the world famous monument. "The cost to the Trust and the taxpayer for repairing the damage after the 1984 festival amounted to more than £20,000," says a report. "The Trust is in touch with organisations which have helped with the festival in the past and urged them to recognise the importance of preventing further damage to the site." Talks are now going ahead with the England Heritage which cares for Stonehenge itself about access to the monument on the night of the Summer Solstice. Says the report "The National Trust is concerned that the public does not make plans to attend a festival at Stonehenge in 1985." Back to 1984 index |
